If you’ve ever visited Hawaii, you’ve probably seen signs reminding visitors to use reef-safe sunscreen.
As someone who spends a lot of time outdoors—and in the ocean—I’ve learned how important it is to choose sun protection that’s safe for both our skin and our environment.
Here’s a guide to what makes a sunscreen reef-safe, plus some of my personal favorites that I use and recommend as a beauty professional living in Hawaii.
What Is Reef-Safe Sunscreen?
Reef-safe sunscreens are free of harmful chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been shown to damage coral reefs and marine life.
Instead, they use mineral-based ingredients like:
Zinc oxide Titanium dioxide (non-nano)
These ingredients sit on top of your skin and reflect UV rays, rather than absorbing them.
My Favorite Reef-Safe Sunscreens

How to Use Sunscreen Properly
Even the best sunscreen won’t work if you don’t apply it the right way!
Here’s how I use it:
Apply 15–20 minutes before going outside Use enough! Most adults need a shot-glass amount Reapply every 2 hours or after swimming or sweating Don’t forget your ears, neck, hands, feet and the tops of your feet!
Have you tried any of these sunscreens? Do you have a favorite reef-safe brand?
