How I Afford Frequent Travel – Credit Card Points & Smart Planning

One of the questions I get asked the most is:

“How do you travel so often?”

Especially since I live in Hawaii, and flying anywhere internationally usually means long (and expensive) flights.

The truth is, I don’t have unlimited time or money—but I’ve learned how to travel smart. I use a mix of credit card points, strategic planning, and flexible travel habits to make frequent travel possible. Here’s how I do it:

1. Using AMEX Points to Book Flights

I use an American Express card that earns Membership Rewards points, and it’s been a game changer.

I collect points through everyday spending—groceries, bills, even business expenses from my salon work. I transfer AMEX points to airline partners like Hawaiian Airlines, Delta, or United. Sometimes I book full tickets with points, or use them to cover part of the cost.

Pro tip: I always check for transfer bonuses—they give you even more value when moving points to airlines!

2. Flying Business Class with Points

One of my favorite travel hacks is using points to upgrade to business class.

I usually book an economy ticket and then upgrade using miles (transferred from AMEX). For long-haul flights, especially to Japan or Europe, flying business makes a huge difference—especially after working long hours! It feels like a luxury, but it’s all thanks to smart use of points—not extra spending.

3. How I Earn Points Fast

People think you need to spend a lot to earn points, but it’s really about how you spend.

I put almost everything on my AMEX—groceries, gas, online shopping, business expenses I use bonus categories like 3x on travel or dining I pay it off in full every month to avoid interest I refer friends to earn referral bonuses

4. Smart Planning = Big Savings

Points aren’t the only way I save. Here’s what else I do:

I use Skyscanner or Trip.com to track flight prices I stay flexible with dates—it helps me find the cheapest options I combine points + cash when needed I usually pack light, which saves on fees and stress

5. Final Thoughts

Traveling often doesn’t have to mean spending a lot of money. With the right tools and a little planning, it’s totally possible to fly more, stress less, and even enjoy a few business class upgrades along the way.
