Living in Honolulu or staying for more than a few days?
Sometimes you just need a little escape — without the hassle of flights or ferries. Luckily, Oahu offers plenty of relaxing and refreshing weekend getaway spots just a short drive away.
Here are my favorite easy trips from Honolulu that you can take without leaving the island 🌿

🧖♀️ 1. Relaxing Escape in Kahuku (North Shore)
Just under 1.5 hours from town, Kahuku is peaceful, uncrowded, and full of local gems.
Do:
- Sunrise beach walks
- Shrimp truck hopping (Giovanni’s!)
- Visit Kahuku Farms Café

🏞️ 2. Nature Retreat in Waiʻanae / Makaha
If you want nature and minimal crowds, head west. Early mornings at Makua Beach sometimes mean swimming with dolphins!
Do:
- Hike the Pink Pillbox
- Sunset at Keawaʻula (Yokohama)
- Snorkeling at Electric Beach

🏕️ 3. Glamping or Camping at Ho’omaluhia Botanical Garden (Kāneʻohe)
Perfect for nature lovers who don’t want to go far — this hidden gem is lush, peaceful, and perfect for picnics or even overnight camping.
Do:
- Walk the garden trails
- Relax by the lake
- Visit Byodo-In Temple nearby

🌊 4. Laid-Back Beach Weekend in Kailua
Cute cafes, soft sand, and calm waters make Kailua ideal for a chill getaway with friends or your partner.
Do:
- Kayak to the Mokulua Islands
- Sunrise yoga on the beach
- Grab açaí bowls at Nalu Health Bar

☕ 5. Staycation in Waikīkī — But Do It Differently
Who says you have to leave Honolulu to feel refreshed? Try a Waikīkī staycation with a twist.
Stay:
- Choose a high-floor hotel room with a lanai view
- Book via Booking.com or use Airbnb for a more local vibe
Do:
- Get a massage
- Eat breakfast on your balcony
- Walk to Kapiʻolani Park for a calm afternoon

🧳 Bonus Tip: Pack Smart
Even for a weekend getaway, I always bring:
- Portable neck fan
- Refillable water bottle
- Reef-safe sunscreen
Weekend getaways don’t have to involve long drives or airplane stress. Sometimes, the best escapes are just around the corner.
Let me know if you have a favorite Oʻahu spot I should explore next!
